Chateaux, Chateaux and more Chateaux
Château de la Mercerie was constructed in the 1930s - nothing more than the dream of two eccentric brothers, whose wish was to create a replica of Versailles. This is situated at Magnac Lavalette Villars and the Château is being painstakingly restored by an army of volunteers, who raise money for this project. Afternoon guided tours may be booked via the Website www.chateaudelamercerie.fr or the Tourist Office at Villebois-Lavalette.
Château of La Rochefoucauld
Château de la Rochefoucauld is my favourite one of all. This 10th Century Château dominates the whole town with its breathtaking grandeur. This Château is privately owned by one of France's oldest Noble families, who live in a Wing of the beautiful building and it is quite common to meet them whilst you are enjoying your tour. Make a day out with this visit ... the children can choose a costume from the Dressing-up Room and, once the tour is over, a stroll down to the Chocolate Factory, then lunch at the little Restaurant will give you a wonderful day out. www.chateau-la-rochefoucauld.com
